What is TON (The Open Network)?

The Open Network (TON) is a decentralized, high-performance layer-1 blockchain platform originally developed by Telegram and now stewarded by the independent TON Foundation. It offers scalable, fast, and efficient infrastructure for building decentralized applications (dApps), financial tools, and Web3 services—often tightly integrated with Telegram.

Origins & Governance

• Origins: TON began in 2018 as the Telegram Open Network, designed to bring blockchain into Telegram’s ecosystem. After legal challenges halted Telegram’s direct involvement in 2020, the project was open-sourced and taken over by the community and TON Foundation.

• Development: Now based in Switzerland, the TON Foundation supports ecosystem growth through grants and coordination—without exerting centralized control. TON remains fully open-source and decentralized.

Technical Highlights

• Dynamic Multi-Chain Architecture: TON incorporates a powerful structure with a masterchain, multiple workchains, and dynamically splitting shardchains. This design allows massive scalability, enabling millions of smart contracts to execute in parallel.

• Consensus: It uses Proof-of-Stake (PoS) with Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT), selecting validators based on staked Toncoin and allowing stakeholders to vote on protocol changes.

• TON Virtual Machine (TVM): A lean, efficient execution environment for smart contracts, compatible with languages like Fift, Func, Tact, and Tolk. It supports formal contract verification and asynchronous messaging.

• Toncoin: Native utility token used for transaction fees, staking, governance, and powering services like TON Storage, TON Proxy, and TON DNS.
